20240321 p51 Study 3, Section 3.2 – Correction: Delete section ‘Deborah and Jael…Gideon’s judgeship in chapters 6-8.’ Replace with ‘In addition, Deborah and Jael both play significant roles in the Barak episode, and in chapter 4 it is even said that Deborah ‘was leading’ (literally ‘judging’) Israel (4:4-5). It should be noted, however, that her main designated role in the narrative seems to be as a prophetess (4:4). The account of Abimelech (chapter 9) is also extended, but he is not specifically named a judge. Thus it appears the main function of his narrative (chapter 9) is an important appendix to Gideon’s career as judge (chapters 6-8).’

The Book of Baruch, possibly composed around 150 BC, was appended to Jeremiah in manuscripts of the Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament) from very early times, and held in high regard by many in the early Church until its status was clarified by Jerome around 400 AD. The book carries forward the story of Jeremiah into Babylonian exile, where Baruch reads “the words of this book” to the exiled Jews (Bar 1:3), referring either to the Book of Baruch itself, or to Lamentations or Jeremiah. The words make the people weep and lament, and they lead into a confession of sins; a prayer for mercy; an exhortation to seek wisdom; and messages of encouragement for the exiles. The God who judged and exiled them will deliver them and bring them into everlasting joy.’
